WARNING:

Mineral supplements should not replace a balanced diet. Advise your doctor of any medicine you take during pregnancy, particularly in your first trimester.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:

Contraindicated with antithyroid drugs.

Caution with Lithium - concurrent administration of iodine and lithium can lead to increased risk of toxicity. Monitor thyroid function.

Caution with drugs affecting potassium levels, including ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, angiotensin II antagonists, potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g. aldactone), heparin (anticoagulant) and ciclosporin (immunosuppressant) - concurrent use of these drugs with potassium iodide increases the risk of hyperkalaemia. Monitor serum potassium.

Caution with drugs containing iodine, e.g. amiodarone (antineoplastic agent) - concurrent use with iodine can increase iodine levels and may affect thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.

Caution with digoxin - potassium supplements may predispose patient to heart block in the presence of cardiac glycosides. Use only under the care of a health professional.

CAUTIONS:

Caution in thyroid conditions without medical advice. Care with dose in pregnancy as many pregnancy multivitamins also contain iodine. Care should be taken to avoid ingestion of excessive iodine during pregnancy due to potential for increasing the rate of postpartum thyroid disorders.
