DRUG INTERACTIONS:

Theoretically, Slippery elm may slow the absorption and reduce serum levels of orally administered drugs due to its mucilage content. Clinical significance is unclear. Caution is warranted with drugs with a narrow therapeutic range (e.g. barbiturates, digoxin, lithium, phenytoin, warfarin). Separate dose by 2 hours.

Caution with warfarin and digoxin - Licorice may affect drug metabolism.

Caution with glucose lowering medications (including metformin) - Aloe vera given in conjunction with glucose-lowering medication may have additive effects. Potentially beneficial interaction.

Caution with thiazide diuretics, cardiac glycosides, corticosteroids (e.g. prednisolone) and stimulant laxatives - Licorice may potentiate hypokalaemia. However, the DGL form is considered safer and less likely to result in drug interactions.

Caution with cyclosporin - Licorice may reduce blood concentrations and quercetin may decrease oral bioavailability. Monitor cyclosporin levels closely.
